A Two-Way
Relationship

August 2005 was not so long ago. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) called Hurricane Katrina the “most destructive hurricane ever to strike the U.S.” The 125 mph sustained winds and subsequent tidal surge devastated wide swaths of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Over 1,800 people died in the storm and in subsequent floods, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane. When all the numbers are finally tallied, it is estimated that the economic impact in Louisiana and Mississippi may exceed $150 billion.

But, in time, people are prone to forget. It is only human nature that as tragedy recedes into the past, we dismiss the possibility of a recurrence. However, hurricanes along the Gulf Coast are not a matter of “if” but “when.” According to the NOAA, tropical storm activity in the Atlantic basin has been above normal since 1995. The average number of named storms since 1995 has been 13, compared to 8.6 during the preceding 25 years.

It’s an old saw that “folks always talk about the weather but no one ever does anything about it.” As true as this may be, there are many things that families, businesses, and local governments can do to prepare for the next “big one.” While plans don’t guarantee a successful post-hurricane response, they do provide a starting point for dealing with the consequences of disaster. Here’s a little quiz to see how prepared you are for the next hurricane:

Families:

§         Do you and your family have an emergency kit already made?

§         Do you have a pre-arranged meeting place for your family in case you separated?

§         Are you adequately insured against flooding?

Businesses:

§         Do you have phone lists of key employees and customers?

§         Do you have a designated remote voice mail number on which to record messages for employees?

§         Have you arranged for programmable call forwarding for your main business line?

§         Have you installed emergency lights that turn on when the power goes out?

§         Do you back up computer data frequently and keep a backup tape off site?

Communities:

§         Do you know who your County Emergency Manager is?

§         Do you have a local hurricane response plan?

§         When was the last time your plans were reviewed for currency?

§         Has the plan ever been practiced?

§         Are there areas of known hazards in need of mitigation?

§         Do you have pre-planned debris staging sites?

§         Do you know the closest hurricane evacuation route?

§         Is there a local Citizen Corps Council to aid in hurricane response?

These are just a few questions to get you thinking about what you can do to prepare for the next hurricane. Check out some of the resources below to find out more and consider your own readiness. There is much that can be done now to prepare for the next “big one.” The effort put into planning now could pay off later not only in dollars and cents but also in lives saved.

TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman

"He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen
 like one being taught."
- Isaiah 50:4b

The prophet Isaiah describes his relationship to God as a relationship that has two-way communication. Have you ever felt that your communication with God was only one way - you to Him only? Isaiah tells us, "The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary....The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back" (Is. 50:4-5).The key to Isaiah's relationship with God lies in four important principles:

He had an instructed tongue. Isaiah had given over rule of his life completely to God's purposes.

He knew the word of the Lord, which allowed him to sustain and encourage others.

He took time to listen.

He did not flee from the tough assignments. He didn't shrink back.

If we are to be able to listen to God, we must follow the same principles. Knowing and spending time studying God's Word allows the Holy Spirit to bring to mind His instructions for what He wants for us. Recently, I became very busy in my work and other activities. It wasn't long before I felt distance between God and me. I had to make a conscious decision to carve out more time alone to listen, study, and meditate on His Word. This is the lifeline for the follower of Jesus. When we begin to lose the relationship, we are susceptible to becoming rebellious, going our own way. Invest your life in this relationship so that you may continue to hear His voice and sustain the weary ones around you.

Can YOU Really STOP Smoking?

Nicotine dependence is an addiction to tobacco products caused by the drug nicotine. Smoke from cigarettes, cigars and pipe contains thousands of chemicals, including nicotine. Smokeless tobacco also contacts nicotine. Nicotine dependence means you can’t stop using the substance, even though it’s causing you harm.

Nicotine produces physical and mood-altering effects in your brain that are temporarily pleasing. These effects spur your continued use of tobacco and lead to dependence. At the same time, quitting tobacco use causes withdrawal symptoms, including irritability and anxiety.

Nicotine dependence brings a host of health problems. While it’s the nicotine in tobacco that keeps you hooked, the toxic effects come mainly from other substances in tobacco.

Tobacco dependence involves psychological as well as physical factors. And yes, you can really stop smoking. But it begins with you.  You are the one who has to decide to stop. Next, recognize the behaviors and cues that you may associate with smoking. Some of these are listed below:

Certain times of the day, such as with morning coffee or during breaks at work

After a meal

Drinking alcohol

Certain places or friends

Talking on the phone

Stressful situations or when you’re feeling down

The smell of a cigarette

Driving your car

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT

The JESUS Film Project

The JESUS film is a two hour motion picture about the life of Christ, taken from the Gospel of Luke. It was filmed in 1979 in the Holy Land, with years of research, painstaking accuracy of color, cloth and sets to reflect first century Palestine. What started as an effort to put the book of Luke to film has resulted in the exposure of most of the world to the gospel of Jesus Christ. No other film in history has been translated in over 1,000 languages. God is truly using this tool to change the lives of millions for the better, as they enter into an eternal relationship with the One who created them.

Kary Hagen, a close personal friend with WGK Principal, Greg Gearhart, works with the JESUS film project as the Postproduction Director. He and his family moved to Orlando, Florida in September of 1991 to begin work with the project. Since that he time he has  traveled overseas to record new language versions, or to premiere a new language version to Taiwan, Mexico, Spain, Romania, Slovenia, Hungary, Thailand, The Netherlands, India, England, Germany, Africa & Bulgaria. Kary’s wife, Maria has also been involved in various aspects of the project such as welcoming newly reporting wives, Support Coach, retreat planning & Kids on a Mission program, and various MC roles.

"The JESUS Film" is now available in over 1,000 languages with over 6 billions viewings. Their goal is to make it available in over 1,500 languages for everyone in the world, to be able to hear the good news in a language they understand. Though some say there are over 6,000 languages in the world, 1,500 represent those with 100,000 or more speakers & over 95% of the world's population. The other people understand a trade language that "JESUS" is in. They are also diversifying to make the message available over radio waves, audiocassette, DVD, TV broadcast, Internet, as well as a product for children and for women.
