EXPECTATIONS

It is amazing how fast paced our lives are now. We all seem to be living everyone else's expectations of what life is really about. We seem to have lost who we are along the way. What happened?

In the book of Matthew Jesus and his Disciples are traveling together just outside of Jericho when they encountered two blind men on the roadside. The two blind men appeal to Jesus and ask for his mercy. What happens next is the important piece of the story; he asks them "What is it that you want me to do for you?" It seems almost like an arrogant statement to the men. Are you kidding? What do I want? I want to see! Jesus forces the men to look inside themselves to their desires for their own lives. He forces them to take a hard look inside.

How often do we do that for ourselves? Most of us are fairly diligent in praying for others, but refuse to pray for ourselves. We must ask ourselves; what is it that I want for my life? What am I blind too? What is God trying to get me to see? What desires in my life have I abandoned?

God desires for us much more than we do for ourselves. The real question should be this "God what do you have for me?" Open my eyes to the purpose in life you have for me; not the expectations placed on me by society, culture, families, occupations or my own internal picture of who I am. Help me be who I am!

Williford, Gearhart & Knight, Inc. was retained by King's Daughters Hospital of Yazoo City to perform the preliminary engineering services required to qualify for funding through the USDA Community Facilities Program for the relocation of KDH to a new site south of the City. The project included coordination between KDH, McCarty Architects, USDA, Stone-Adams Financial and Yazoo City. The scope of services included the completion of a boundary and topographic survey of the 35 acre proposed site, the completion of a Phase 1 environmental site assessment for two potential sites, the completion of preliminary soil borings on the preferred site, the preparation of a preliminary environmental assessment report for the two potential sites, and the preparation of preliminary opinions of probable project cost for the civil/site development and off-site utilities for the preferred site. The purpose of the project is to relocate the existing hospital and to build a new facility that will meet current standards and provide improved services to the residents in the area. The pre-application was submitted to USDA in April 2008, and KDH is currently awaiting receipt of a funding commitment from USDA prior to proceeding further. Once approved, this will be a $32 million dollar project which will last several years.

Each year, over 3.5 million children ages 14 and under suffer from sports-related injuries.  It is estimated that as many as 20 percent of children participating in sports are injured each year.

Every day, from soccer fields to ice rinks, millions of youths participate in sports-related activities. These fun activities help develop a youth’s muscles and coordination, but can also result in injury if the proper safety precautions are ignored. Young athletes are more susceptible to injuries because their bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing.

Safety Tips

Young athletes do get hurt, but that is no reason to turn them all into couch potatoes. Rather, parents and coaches need to take the proper precautions by following safety guidelines and using proper protective equipment to keep them safe during play. Parents, coaches, and children are encouraged to follow these safety precautions before beginning a sport:

  • Know and abide by the rules of the sport.

  • Be in proper physical condition before beginning any sport.

  • Wear proper apparel and protective gear required.

  • Know how properly use athletic equipment.

  • Be sure to warm up before playing.

  • Drink plenty of liquids before playing to prevent dehydration.

  • Do not play when tired or in pain.

If Injury Occurs

Prompt treatment can often prevent a minor injury from turning into something much worse. If a child displays any of the following signs, it may warrant a visit to the doctor:

  • Inability or decreased ability to play

  • Visible deformity

  • Severe pain that prevents the use of an arm or leg

  • Symptoms which persist or affect athletic performance

Prevention

Most sports-related injuries are preventable. The following are steps coaches and parents can take to help reduce the chances of an injury occurring:

  • Enroll your child in programs where you know an adult will be monitoring the event.

  • Be sure your child uses the proper safety equipment.

  • Teach your child to start by warming up and stretching.

  • Remind your child to cool down afterwards.

Born December 30, 1947 in Brookhaven, Mississippi, to parents Edward F. & Janet M. Moreton both of Brookhaven. A lifelong resident of Brookhaven, Steve Moreton is married to the lovely Beverly Hare Moreton with two sons Alan, 28, & Layne, 23. He has one grandchild, Ava Grace Moreton, 5.

Steve graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1966. He attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi.

He has been serving the City of Brookhaven for 19 years; in 1989 he was hired as the City Building Inspector & Purchasing Agent. In 2006, he was asked to serve as the Director of Public Works and maintain his capacity as Purchasing Agent for the city.

His ancestry runs deep in Brookhaven, as his great grandfather, A. E. Moreton, was one of the first builders in Brookhaven. Mr. A. E. Moreton, originally of Baltimore, Maryland, was requested to build the Opera House in New Orleans. After completing the project, on his way back home to Baltimore he got off the train in Brookhaven and decided to settle in the city. He went on to become a prominent businessman in the area. His grandfather, Alfred Moreton, served as Alderman and Mayor of Brookhaven from 1939-1949. Steve’s father, Edward, was a residential & commercial contractor and built many of the existing businesses in Brookhaven.

Steve began helping his father at a young age and grew to love the City he helped his father to build. His love of the city aids him in his job, as he keeps the City's best interest at heart in all of his decisions.

When not at work, Steve enjoys spending time with friends and family, and is also an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially loves fishing with his sons and enjoys watching his granddaughter, Ava Grace, play ball and dance.

A growing number of Americans are sniffling and suffering with allergies and asthma. Several studies have shown that air pollution and indoor allergens make asthma symptoms worse and can bring on an asthma attack. If you're 1 of the 23 million Americans who suffer from asthma, you might get some relief by taking steps to reduce indoor allergen levels and modifying your lifestyle to avoid the ill effects of air pollution. Asthma is caused by swelling and inflammation of your airways. When the airways narrow, less air gets through to your lungs, causing wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and trouble breathing.

If you have asthma:

  • Avoid outdoor activities in the afternoons on warmer days, when the risk of air pollution is highest.

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities if the air is polluted. Check your region's air quality index, which is often reported in the local news. Orange and red mean it's a bad air day and that children and adults with respiratory diseases should avoid the outdoors. Purple and maroon mean air pollution is extreme and everyone should try to stay inside.
