Woodland Hills Box Culvert

  County: Madison
Category: Residential/Commercial Dev.

A major drainage ditch which drains part of Whisper Lake Golf Course and Annandale Subdivision in Madison County, Mississippi flows into a 48” CMP insufficient to carry storm water runoff. An uninformed housing contractor built a house on the vacant lot. After the slab was poured and the house framed, Madison County had a rain event considered to be a 100-year storm (April ’03 flood) and water flowed 12” deep over the slab. Since it was an unusual storm, the contractor decided to finish building the house. After the house was occupied, Mississippi had several weeks of rain. Then a quick “heavy rainstorm” fell and the homeowners had to open the back and front doors to let 6” of water flow through the house (back to front flow).

The solution was to put a larger drainage structure between the houses. Mr. Colsen of Aqua Engineering determined that the flow would require approximately 40 sq. ft. of opening between the houses and relief openings for water to escape on the downstream end in the form of three 5 ft. curb inlets and four 5’ by 4’ grate inlets. The downstream pipe is a 48” RCP.

WGK determined that a 10’ by 4’ pre-cast box culvert was the only drainage structure that would fit between the houses, have at least 1’ of cover and could be installed in a timely fashion. Of note, the narrowest distance between the houses is 19’, which means that the box is 3.5’ from each house and the box runs within 1.5’ parallel to one house for a distance of 17’.
