Summit CDBG Rail Spur

Summit, Mississippi · Pike County

When an existing industry in the Town of Summit was renovated for conversion to plastics manufacturing, an approximately, 2,500-foot rail spur from the main Canadian National North-South line was necessary for the company to ship out its products. Town leaders enlisted the support of WGK, Inc., to coordinate with railroad officials and the Mississippi Development Authority and provide the engineering services needed. The project was designed in two phases: Phase I would see the raised rail bed built up and fitted with drainage piping and ditches, while Phase II called for the installation of the ballast and tracking itself. WGK performed all field survey and data collection, gathered rights of way, prepared plans and technical specifications, obtained permits, developed grading specifications, controlled erosion and designed the rail switch. WGK served also performed construction engineering, inspection and testing services.
