Wesson Hurricane Katrina Drainage Repairs

Client:

Town of Wesson

Location:

Wesson, Mississippi · Copiah County

A tributary to Fords Creek in Wesson—which passes under Will Bridges Lane on the campus of Wesson Attendance Center—sustained heavy damage from high flows and downed trees during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, resulting in extreme bank erosion and reduced hydraulic capacity. The damage to the drainage ditch was threatening to cause upstream flooding on Fords Creek, so town leaders sought the assistance of WGK, Inc., to utilize its Community Development Block Grant funding to design a stabilization project. The firm drew up plans to clear and armor the channel.

  • Complete project erosion control.
  • Removal of 845 cubic yards of material.
  • Installation of a 32 linear-foot extension for a 72-inch corrugated metal pipe.
  • Installation of 1,189 square yards of geotextile fabric.
  • Application of 968 tons of loose riprap.
  • Installation of cast-in-place wing wall.
  • Total Project Cost: $95,300.
